Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, which is $3,000 to $9,000 for 150 feet. In Boston, expect the upper half of that range: lots are tight, old fences and concrete have to be hauled out, and posts go deep for frost.
Price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, not our own quotes. Boston-area labor and disposal usually put a job in the upper half of a range. Last checked October 2026.

What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link is the cheapest fence to install, starting around $9 per foot. The cheapest privacy fence is usually pressure-treated pine with dog-ear pickets. For keeping a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5 or 6 foot chain link does the job; add privacy slats later if you want them.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
Aluminum ($25 to $75 per foot) is cheaper than wrought iron ($50 to $85) and overlaps with vinyl ($30 to $60). It gives the iron look without the rust or the weight, which is why it is common around Boston pools and front yards.
How much extra does a gate cost?
Gates are priced per gate, not per foot. The price depends on width, material and hardware. A single walk gate adds the least; a double drive gate or a gate with an opener adds the most. We list each gate as its own line on the estimate so you can see it.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
Three things raise a Boston estimate most often: removing and hauling the old fence, clearing brush or roots along the line, and a slope or ledge that slows digging. All three depend on the yard, so we price them after seeing it.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
Line them up item by item before comparing totals. Check the length in feet, fence height, wood species or vinyl grade, post size and depth, number of gates, removal of the old fence, permit, and cleanup. A quote that is far below the others usually leaves one of these out. Bids for the same written scope should land close to each other.
Does a fence add value to my home?
A fence in good condition helps a sale, especially for buyers with dogs or children, but it rarely pays back its full cost. Whether it changes your property tax assessment is decided by your city assessor.
