We install pool fences in Boston and the nearby towns for in-ground and above-ground pools. Most are black aluminum, because it does not rust, keeps the view of the water and can be built to the spacing and height a pool barrier needs. Vinyl and wood are used where the owner also wants privacy.
A pool fence is an inspected safety barrier, not only a yard fence. Massachusetts requires a barrier around a pool with a minimum height, limits on gaps, and gates that close and latch by themselves. The inspector checks the fence before the pool is signed off, so the fence has to be planned with the pool and finished before the final inspection. We build to the numbers your building department gives for your address.
The gate is where most pool fences fail an inspection. We use self-closing hinges and a self-latching latch set at the required height, hang the gate so it swings away from the pool, and close the gap at the bottom. If you already have a fence and it failed, send us the inspector's notes and we quote the fixes against them.
Pool fences in Boston: common questions
Can my existing yard fence count as the pool barrier?
Sometimes. It has to meet the pool barrier rules on every side, including the gates, and the house wall can only count if its doors meet the rules too. Your building department decides. We can look at the fence you have and tell you what would need to change.
Should the fence go in before or after the pool?
Plan both together. The pool crew needs a way in for equipment, so the section across that path usually goes up after the pool is dug, and the whole barrier has to be complete before the pool is signed off.
Which material is best around a pool?
Aluminum is the usual choice near Boston: it does not rust from pool water or winter salt and needs no painting. Vinyl gives privacy and is also low upkeep. Wood works but needs sealing, and chain link is the lowest cost where looks matter less.
