Storm Damaged Fence in Boston: What to Do and Who Pays

What to do when a storm or a fallen tree takes down your fence in Boston: fast repair, insurance, neighbor trees and temporary fixes.

Storm Damaged Fence in Boston: What to Do and Who Pays

If a storm took your fence down, call a fence company for the repair and call your insurer before any work starts. Take photos of the damage and of what caused it first.

Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?

Call us with the length that is down and a photo. A fallen section with broken posts is a major repair, typically $900 to $2,500 by national 2026 figures. After a large storm every fence company is busy, so the earlier you call, the earlier you are on the schedule.

My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?

Ask for a temporary closure. Bracing the standing posts and closing the gap with a temporary panel keeps pets in until the permanent repair. Tell us when you call that there are animals or a pool in the yard, since that changes the order of the work.

Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?

Often yes, as part of the coverage for other structures on the property, but it depends on your policy, your deductible and what caused the damage. A small repair may cost less than the deductible. Your insurer or agent is the only one who can confirm it. We give a written estimate you can send them.

My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?

In most cases you claim on your own policy for damage to your own fence, even when the tree stood next door. It can be different if the tree was known to be dead or dangerous. Ask your insurer. We can replace only the damaged sections if matching material is available.

The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?

Insurers may pay the depreciated value of an old fence, not the price of a new one. Ask the adjuster for the calculation in writing and send them an itemized estimate. If the gap stays, a repair of the damaged sections is often the practical middle.

The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?

Under Massachusetts law, neighbors who both use a partition fence share its upkeep equally unless they agreed otherwise (General Laws chapter 49, section 3). If you do not know where the line is, a land surveyor settles that, not a fence company. See our page on shared fences.

We needed our fence replaced and Kevin and his team did a great job putting up a new fence in a very short amount of time. Kevin came by check out our old fence and give us an estimate, and within 48 hours, we had a beautiful new fence that is much nicer and more more durable than our old one. We highly recommend the Boston Fence Company.

Very happy with the wooden fence. It’s sturdy and well-installed. The weather caused a slight delay, but the team communicated effectively and didn’t leave until everything was completed correctly.

I don’t usually leave reviews, but these guys did a really clean job. You can tell they know what they’re doing. The black vinyl fence is even all the way through, no weird gaps or leaning posts.
